News from Mayor Wayne J. Hall, Sr.

Village of Hempstead breaks ground on downtown redevelopment

I am happy to share that yesterday the Incorporated Village of Hempstead held the groundbreaking to commence the revitalization of our Downtown Main Street District. This is a significant step in this major redevelopment of downtown Hempstead, including four recently approved site plans in the North Main Street area, including mixed-use housing, retail stores, and corporate offices. Myself, Deputy Mayor Luis Figueroa, Trustees Waylyn Hobbs, Jr., Don Ryan and Perry Pettus joined a host of local elected officials and the Master Developer, Renaissance Downtowns/UrbanAmerica and RXR Realty, to commence the demolition of 178 Main Street—the site of the former Mack Markowitz Oldsmobile dealership.

The downtown revitalization initiative is expected to create 12,000 construction job years and 6,000 permanent full-time jobs; it is expected to generate tens of millions in new annual tax revenue at full build out. In addition, the project has been responsible for garnering more than $30 million for public infrastructure improvements to help move the project forward. The project will transform Hempstead’s downtown into a vibrant mixed-use, walkable neighborhood that will provide significant economic, social and environmental benefits for the entire Hempstead community.  This has been a long journey, and I want to thank my team, the Master Developer and the people of the Village for their ongoing support to reach this milestone.

A Season for giving in the Village of Hempstead

Helping others in need during the holidays has been a long-standing tradition here in the Village of Hempstead. I, along with Board of Trustees would like to thank the many organizations and businesses that made contributions to this year’s special events, and all of those who made personal donations or offered their time to help make the holidays bright for everyone in the Village.  With the help of Stop and Shop, Chamsarang Korean Methodist Church, Arumdaun Korean Church, Northwell Ambulatory Services, Sonic Cars Wash, Henry St. Liquor Store and Fidelis we distributed over 460 Turkeys to residents in need.  Our local churches and not-for-profits did an excellent job at serving hot food during the Thanksgiving holiday as well.  Again, we can't thank you enough for all that you do!

Important Steps Residents can take to Protect their Holiday packages this Season!

As we enjoy the conveniences of ordering online this holiday remember to stay mindful of the potential of theft and fraudulent activity.  Get your packages safely by following these steps:

  • Use Tracking Apps - This allows you to have a "real-time" idea of where your packages are in the delivery process. It also provide an approximate time of delivery so you can arrange for someone to be home to collect the package.
  • Require a signature - If you select this option you must have someone home to sign for the package or else it will not be delivered.  This however, assures your packages won't be left on the porch.
  • Use Alternate Addresses or Special Delivery Options - If you have a relative or friend who is home during working hours it would be safer to have the items sent to that alternate location.  You can specify delivery to the side door or rear of the house if necessary as well.
  • Entrust a neighbor to receive your package when needed.
  • Space out deliveries to avoid multiple packages at the same time.
If you see theft taking place please call the Hempstead Police Department at 911.   All Non-Emergency complaints can be directed to the VillageLine at 516-478-6333.  Download the VillageLine app click here.
