The Village of Hempstead officials recently welcomed residents, local war veterans and community leaders to the Roosevelt Post Office for the unveiling of a statute in honor of the late Brigadier General George A. Jones, veteran of WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Brig. Gen. Jones was 16 when he first enlisted in the New York National Guard in 1939, later going on to join the U.S. Army. While in retirement in 1970, he was promoted by the New York Guard to brigadier general. In addition, Jones served as a New York City firefighter for 20 years and served as the director for equal opportunity employment in Nassau County for 30 years.

Jones was in attendance at the unveiling, but passed away shortly after at the age of 93. He was laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery with full military honors.
