Hiring Requirements

Duties
Performs general law enforcement duties, and patrols an assigned area for the protection of lives and property and the enforcement of laws and ordinances over which the Police Department has jurisdiction; performs related duties as required. Works shifts are on a 24-hour a-day, seven-day-a-week basis.

Salary
Starting salary is $45,183 plus night differential and holiday pay.

Education
High school graduate or must possess a high school equivalency diploma by date of appointment. G.E.D.’s are acceptable.

Residency
Specific residency requirements are subject to change and will be made known at the posting of the next Nassau County Civil Service Testing for the position of Police Officer.

Successful candidates that are legal residents of the Inc. Village of Hempstead at the time of their application for the exam and who maintain said residence until appointment, can receive preference in appointment.

Age
Specific age requirements are subject to change and will be made known at the posting of the next Nassau County Civil Service Testing for the position of Police Officer.

License
Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License is required at time of certification from the eligible list.

Citizenship
Candidates must be United States citizens at time of appointment.

Note
As of yet, Nassau County Civil Service Commission does NOT have a testing date scheduled for the position of Police Officer.
